The Deputy Minister for Public Service and Administration, Ms. Ayanda Dlodlo, on behalf of the South African government as Special Envoy to the Open Government Partnership (OGP), hosted a working level OGP Steering Committee meeting from 22 - 24 July 2015 at Irene Country Lodge in Centurion, Pretoria.

In attendance were government representatives from Brazil, Croatia, Indonesia, Mexico, Philippines, Tanzania, United Kingdom, the United States and France, as well as members of several civil society formations from across the globe.

The session is the first event in the lead up to South Africa taking over as Lead Chair of OGP in October 2015. The three day meeting, provided members with the opportunity to reflect, exchange views and also to engage each other through subcommittee meetings which were responsible for agenda and papers on Governance and Leadership, Criteria and Standards, including Peer Learning and Support.

Members used the discussions to also look at key issues that have emerged from the OGP progress indicators, including presentations from each country on national OGP implementation and matters pertaining to updates on status of National Action Plans due in 2015.

The delegates received updates from the OGP Support Unit, also planning for the OGP Global Summit in Mexico. Other significant issues discussed include how to promote the use of open data as a tool in the development of responsive, participatory and evidence based public policies as well as the implementation of the post 2015 Development Agenda. Emanating from the meeting, an African OGP Points of Contact (POC) Forum was established.

Launched in September 2011, the OGP is a mechanism to promote increased accountability, transparency, citizen participation and the fight against corruption in the respective countries and across the world and is developed to assist participating states to improve their governance systems by applying a set of good governance principles which are civic participation.

The South African government has been an active member of the OGP steering Committee and played a key role in convening OGP- Africa regional events and discussions forums aimed at deepening good governance practices on the African continent.
