Open Government Initiatives

Over the past two decades the South African government and its citizens have implemented a number of initiatives that seek to improve citizen participation, accountability, innovation and transparency in government. The Open Government Partnership (OGP) is a major international initiative launched in 20 September 2011 to which South Africa has made specific commitments, but is also an opportunity to showcase existing open government initiatives across the country and build momentum around open government activities in general. Over time we aim to build stronger links between existing initiatives and the OGP commitments.

For more information read about the international OGP plans, view South Africa’s specific OGP commitments below, and browse our growing list of existing open government initiatives in South Africa.
